Hey this tends to looks best when the background is plain or simple. It's adds a little bit of life to your text

Make a plain background. I made mine with a few gradients, but it can eb anything.
Make a new layer.
Type your text (tip - thicker fonts looks best with this technique)
Duplicate your background layer.
Ctrl + click on the text layer in the layer menu to select it.
Your top background layer (the copy) must be active!
Press delete.
You might think nothing has happened as you cant see it, but you've cut out the text into the layer.
Click the eye icon next to the text layer to hide it. you should get this:
Click the "f" at the bottom of the layers pallette for layer styles,
or go to Layers/layer style.
Choose Bevel and Emboss.
Change your settings until you get a look you like.
Then go to drop shadow and do the same.
Next choose your bottom backround layer.
Ctrl + L to open levels.
Drag the left arrow to the right a bit, the middle one should mvoe to the right with it.
The inside of the text should darken.
The result:
